IRS Launches New Online Tool to Help Taxpayers Manage Tax Debt

The IRS has released a new online tool designed to help individuals and businesses better understand and resolve their tax debt. The Tax Debt Help tool became available on the IRS website on Thursday, April 16, 2026 — the day after the 2025 tax filing season ended.

The tool provides users with a simple, step-by-step guide to explore payment options and determine the best next steps for resolving their tax debt, according to an IRS news release.

“This tool demonstrates the transformation underway at the IRS and our progress in delivering more user-friendly, digital-first services to taxpayers,” said IRS CEO Frank Bisignano in the release.

Users answer a short series of straightforward questions about their financial situation and tax debt. Based on their responses, the tool recommends potential resolution options, such as installment agreements, temporary collection delays, or an Offer in Compromise for those who qualify.

Taxpayers do not need to provide personal information such as their Social Security number, name, or address to use the tool.
